English

At Key Stage 3 the English curriculum is taught through six units of work in each year, each unit developing skills in either reading, writing, or speaking and listening. At Key Stage 4 the curriculum is structured around the GCSE course content. While the broad knowledge and skills developed are the same, teaching approaches and text selection may vary between teachers.

Through the exploration of a wide range of literary texts, and the use of language in many contexts, our aim is to help students to master the essential tools of communication and to learn to think critically. We want all learners to be literate, articulate and insightful members of society and believe that all students should have the opportunity to be exposed to culturally enriching literature in order to help them develop as tolerant and discerning global citizens. We seek to foster a love of reading and, as such, all students will have a fortnightly reading lesson dedicated to reading a text of their choice and completing their reading logs and activities.
