Over the last five years, students of Cambourne Village College have been joining students from Comberton Village College to take part in the annual Spanish exchange. Every year, students have the opportunity to travel to Zaragoza, where they stay with local host families. During their stay, our students attend lessons with their Spanish peers, develop projects and explore the beautiful city and its surroundings.
Later in the academic year, our Spanish partners come to Cambourne to stay with their English host families. They attend lessons at Cambourne Village College with their peers and participate in a range of activities, which give them an insight into life in the UK.
From a linguistic point of view, this successful partnership brings language learning to life for many of our students. The linguistic immersion that our pupils experience in everyday life during their stay in Spain is a tangible boost to their language skills. Upon their return, students are visibly more confident when using Spanish and their listening skills have vastly improved.
Attending a secondary school in a country that speaks another language, living with the host family, embracing an unfamiliar culture and traditions is also a valuable life experience. Beyond the linguistic purpose, students have the opportunity to widen their cultural awareness and embrace new and exciting traditions. Moreover, for many, it increases motivation to further explore other languages and cultures.
